Darlin’s Pick: Career Development Office

NAU Career Development provides help to students for all things job related — job interviews, internships, resume editing, and career advising.

The best time to go into their office is literally whenever — but I think when you’re looking for a job is one of the best times to go.

They can help prepare you for interviews and even help edit your resume! They are always there, all year long. So whenever you have time, feel free to stop by.

Unfortunately, I waited until my senior year to take advantage of their resources. They really helped me edit my resume for jobs. I knew what I needed to do — but I just couldn’t put my finger on how to edit it.

They really are as helpful as everyone who has gone to them, as said.

The best part is that even if you’ve graduated from NAU, they are always there as a resource!

Tarryn’s Pick: NAU Career Closet

The NAU Career Closet is a great resource for students needing professional attire.

Whether for class presentations, interviews, jobs, career fairs, conferences, or other needs, the Career Closet provides donated business clothing to all Lumberjacks at no cost.

Every student can receive up to 4 clothing items per semester and unlimited “accessories” to include shoes, ties, scarves, handbags, jewelry, undershirts, hygiene items, and more.

The Closet also welcomes donations of gently used blazers, button-up shirts, suits, vests, belts, and more in the University Union. The Career Closet is a great resource available to all students, regardless of major or class year.

As a personal tip, you don’t have to wait for an interview in order to visit the closet! It is open to everyone, and you can even sign up for mock interviews, create job search strategies, or build your application materials in the Career Development office.

Suzanna’s Pick: Academic Success Center

Tutoring assistance and supplemental instruction are two ways to get additional help for difficult courses.

The Academic and Success Center offers both and there’s even two locations — one at the Union and one on South campus.

DYK the ASC offers FREE tutoring support in over 100 courses, both in-person and online through Zoom

Students can book up to three appointments per week, per subject.

Appointments are 45 minutes long and are available in-person or online.

Supplemental instruction, or SI sessions, are weekly review sessions led by a student who has previously taken the course and performed well.

They are offered all semester long — but it’s always best to go in when you need help to get a better understanding rather than the week of the exam.

The best time to use these resources are during a difficult unit or concept and before finals.

Personally, I’m so thankful for SI sessions for accounting classes or else I wouldn’t have understood balance sheets for the final. Highly recommend to use these resources whenever you can.

McKinley’s Pick: Going to Office Hours

Most teachers offer times when students can stop by their office. Whether it’s help with classes, professional advice, or just someone to talk to — definitely take advantage of these opportunities to get to know your professor better and for them to get to know you!

It’s a great way to get to know your professor or grasp the class material. Office hour visits can also help prepare you for tests or clarify concepts.

And when you’re on the job search — they are invaluable with their advice and expertise.

I once went to my selling professor during office hours to get professional advice about a freelance opportunity! She talked me through what to expect and how to go about this opportunity professionally.

Remember our teachers are there to help us, so take advantage of the resources they provide!

Lavanya’s Pick: NAU Safe Walk Program

NAUPD offers a Night/Safety Escort Service for students, faculty, and staff who need to travel across campus after dark. The service provides safe transportation, either by walking or driving, to on-campus destinations, especially in poorly lit or isolated areas.

Hours

  • The Safe Walk program is available from dusk to dawn daily.
  • The University Safety Aide program provides escort services from 9:00 pm to 3:00 am Thursday through Saturday, 8:00 pm to 12:00 am Sunday through Wednesday. Outside of those times, escort services are provided by patrol officers or police aides.
  • A Safe Walk can be arranged by calling 928–523–3611 at the time the escort is needed.

Best time to use it :

  • Nighttime hours: When campus activity winds down and fewer people are around.
  • Finals week (exams): When late-night studying is common and it’s dark and cold.
Unfamiliar areas: If you’re new to campus or walking through less-populated parts of campus late at night.

My friend often works late at the library until 2 AM. She isn’t worried about walking home alone though because of the NAUPD Night/Safety Escort Service. She calls the police department, and within minutes, an officer arrives to escort her safely back to her dorm.

Having this service available gave her the confidence to study late without concern for her safety, knowing she would always have a secure way to get home after dark.

Leilani’s Pick: Office of Indigenous Student Success

With over 80 tribes represented from across the country, OISS has a safe place for every indigenous student.

Office of Indigenous Student Success (OISS) offers a variety of opportunities and programs for indigenous students.

Right from the start, incoming indigenous students are assigned an indigenous peer mentor to help them prepare, develop, and guide them through their first year here at NAU.

Students can schedule a meeting with their peer mentor for support or assistance if needed.

OISS was very helpful my incoming freshmen year. Any questions I had about classes, clubs, my degree, all of the above — my peer mentor could help and provide me advice and information about that.

It was amazing being able to relate on a cultural and spiritual level since we both came from similar cultural backgrounds which really made me feel comfortable and happy that there are students here at NAU who can relate to me and want the same goal — to get a higher education.
