Last year our team reflected on 2019 and shared our predictions for 2020. While we came at it from different angles, we all agreed that TikTok was THE next big thing.

What is TikTok?

If you’re looking for Gen Z — you will find them here vying for their 15 seconds of fame. According to Social Media Today, the app has over 500 million users worldwide and is still growing.

Who’s using TikTok? Primarily teenagers. However, TikTok videos are making their way to Twitter and showing up even more on Instagram Stories.

2. More IGTV 📹

Show, don’t tell

Because of apps like TikTok and the new features in Instagram Stories — capturing and editing videos has never been easier. You don’t need a huge budget or master producer to create a fully-edited end product. Everything you need is at your finger tips 📲

Keep producing your content and try out different video styles to see what works best for you and your audience!

3. Podcasts enter the socialsphere 🎧 🎙

About 46% of new podcast listeners get connected through posts on social media.

Though video is the name of the game, podcasts are a close second. According to a 2019 report 32% of Americans now listen to podcasts monthly.

As podcasts grow in popularity, the audience you can expect will continue to diversify.

#DYK NAU Social unveiled our official university channel last semester — Lumberchats: Inside NAU.

Subscribe and follow along as we give you an inside look into campus life from the eyes of those who know it best — our students, staff and professors.

3. Augmented Reality will become more commonplace

Wide spread adoption of AR has been slow due to limitations related to cost and technology but experts expect that to change in 2020, allowing more brands to increase their AR usage.

The technology of AR continues to advance as we see in a lot of settings related to online shopping.

At NAU Social, we’re looking to create Lumberjack masks and other AR effects so no matter where you are in the world — you can always show your Lumberjack pride 💛💙

4. Stories aren’t going away

If you’ve ever come to NAU Social Office Hours, you’ve heard us speak on and on about the power of Stories. 2020 won’t be any different.

With platforms like Youtube, Facebook and even Whatsapp adapting story features — you can expect 2020 to be full of Stories.

What should you do?

Take advantage of the features 📲 add question stickers, polls, and quizzes to interact with your audience and engage WITH them.

Use stories to create additional opportunities for your audience to connect with you and one another. Share experiences and information that only come to those who follow and watch your story.
