🎓 Dressing Like a College Grad

Your #NAUGrad cap & gown guide

🎓 Lumberjacks, it’s almost your moment.

Soon you’ll be making your way across the stage and you’ll no longer be NAU students but NAU ALUMNI.

It’s a big day (probably the biggest day of your collegiate life) and you’ll want to look your best. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered from head-to-toe.

You’ve got your gear- now what?

Tip: Try on your gown (and shoes too) and size it to your height. The length should extend to mid-calf and the sleeves should meet your wrist.

While this might cover-up your fashionable attire, think of it this way- you have a built in layer for the unpredictable Flagstaff weather (yes, we’ve had ceremonies with snow one day and sun the next).

Cap it off (and avoid cap hair)

Your mortarboard should be placed flat on the head.

So flat that a glass of water could be balanced on it ☕️

To make sure it stays put, try it on beforehand and be sure to have bobby pins handy (trust us, they will be your best friend).

The front of the cap is indicated on the inside of the crown. Check it twice and make sure you’re not wearing it backwards.

Lumberjack tip: Try adding a headband to your cap to ensure it stays in place!

From right to left

The long, navy and gold tassel fastens to the button on the top of the cap.

👀 When you start the day, the tassel will be on the right.

Once all the degrees have been awarded, President Cruz Rivera will prompt you to make the switch.

That’s when it becomes official and the streamers fly 🎊

P.S. Don’t forget about the adds ons

Stoles of Gratitude

NAU’s stole of gratitude has replaced the university seal emblem on the gown and should be worn around your neck, on the outside of your gown.

Honor Cords

You’ve worked hard and it’s time to show it. While optional, the honor cords let everyone know of your academic achievements.

Color guide:

Cum Laud- light blue

Magna Cum Laud- navy blue

Suma Cum Laud- gold

Above and beyond

And let’s not forget our graduate students. When you’ve earned more than one degree, it’s only fitting you have extra flair.

Make a statement

Add your personal flair to your mortar board and don’t forget to share them with us. Tag #NAUGrad

Now, let’s get the party started

After four years, it’s time to celebrate. Congratulations and we’ll be rooting you on!
