When you’ve been a part of the NAU Social team, you get to know the campus and the people pretty well. As our senior intern Maddie Rice gets ready for her next adventure, we sat her down and asked her to share her favorite memories and tips of the trade for those who will fill her shoes.

What did you think it would be like when you applied?

When I first applied for the internship I thought it would be a strict one. I had never had one before and thought that I would be sitting at a desk proof reading future posts or getting coffee for my bosses — none of which I did.

What was it actually like?

IT IS SO MUCH FUN! The people you get to work with are amazing and all the adventures they send you on are so awesome!

This internship re-introduced me to my love for NAU. As a senior I was starting to fall into the senior slump.

Being an intern for NAU Social reminded me why I chose to come to here in the first place.

My favorite part of this internship is that it completely allowed me to be creative and have fun. I love to craft and research what is trending in the social world, this internship not only allowed me to do that but encouraged me to do that.

I also got to go on some cool adventures like a brewery tour with HRM’s Beer Basics class, Chef Mark’s food tastings, and check out the sound/video offices in the Dome!

What surprised you most?

How far out of my box I had to go for this internship. I am comfortable with being behind the scenes and creating content to be used. But during my second semester I had the opportunity to interview students around campus and it wasn’t easy. I am not one to just walk up and strike a conversation. But after doing these interviews a few times, I have gotten the hang of it and now talk to strangers just to talk!

Here’s one of the videos I helped put together for our Lumberjack Love series.

How do you think you grew as a person?

I grew the most in being outgoing and introducing myself to people. You can’t just take a picture of someone and not have them think you’re a creeper. I pushed myself to ask people and get to know them a little, it also helps when you ask for a picture later.

What’s your favorite picture taken and piece created for NAU Social?

My favorite picture would be between these two…

Going on all of these fun adventures and meeting so many great people. I will also miss just being involved in my school and looking at my campus through a lens.

What do you love about social media and how do you think you’ll use it in the future?

I LOVE social media. I love the endless opportunities to be creative but also the community that is there. If you post something that someone else likes you can have a great conversation about it.

I use social media to discover more about those around me. I have a few accounts that are dedicated to Flagstaff and through those I have learned so much! Social media is a learning tool, not a time waster.

What advice do you have for future interns?

There are a ton of things you can learn in this internship! You will find your road blocks (mine was making videos and talking to strangers) but you will learn how to overcome them and become a pro.

Also, take what you learn here and apply it to your life. That way you can learn from your bosses and get a little more hands on with it.
