Luzviminda
Come with us to FASA Club’s Culture Night
By: Danielle Doyle, McKinley Burnett, Molly Murphy
One of the great perks of college is meeting people from all over. At NAU, we have clubs like Filipino American Student Association, Chinese Culture Club, the HAPA Hawaiian Club, and more!
These clubs are bringing people together and exploring cultures.
Cultural Clubs: a great way to explore different cultures & connect with the campus community.
Cultural Night: FASA edition
At NAU we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Month in April rather than May so our students can participate in the celebrations.
In April, NAU’s FASA Club (Filipino American Student Association) held Luzviminda — a celebration of the Filipino culture through traditional foods and dances.
The name — Luzviminda — represents the three main islands of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The night was a fun way to experience the Filipino culture through dance performances and food (did we mention it was free?!). The dishes on the menu were were BBQ pork, turon and lumpia.
After the food was served, the multitude of performances began from many places and origins within the Philippines.
There were dances that varied from all females, all men, and even some partner dances. The dances throughout the night were from different provinces and islands which seemed to encapsulate the diversity within their own culture.
Not only did FASA perform, but another cultural club — NAU HAPA Hawaiian club did too! They took to the stage and performed two dances — No Luna and La’u Samoa.
It was truly a great night of celebration and community!
Nights, like Luzviminda, are fun and easy ways to get involved and support our AAPI communities and clubs on campus, as well bettering NAU’s understanding of all cultures!
