My #Winning Experience With an On-Campus Job
New connections and new experiences with Campus Living
by NAU Senior Janelle Dela Cruz
Working an on-campus job has completely changed my college experience.
During my junior year, I was desperate to meet new people and keep myself busy. I was scrolling through Handshake and found a listing for a Residential College Ambassador (now known as a CLIP Peer Supporter).
I decided to apply and told myself that the interview itself would be a great experience even if I wasn’t offered the position.
As it turned out, the interview wasn’t the only experience I would be gaining!
What I did with Campus Living
In Campus Living I worked closely with other CAs to make the campus living experience enjoyable for students and to help build a community that could follow students through their years at NAU.
I primarily worked in freshman living communities — planning events and coming up with new ways to engage freshmen on a weekly basis.
I made bulletin boards, composed weekly emails, created event flyers and even had my hand in collaborative event planning. I also held many conversations with my peers, students and faculty.
Each task was preparing me for my future while still allowing room for creative freedom.
What I gained from working with Campus Living
- Friendships
I worked with Campus Living for over a year and met amazing people along the way. I was able to connect with people within my major that I hadn’t met before — the friendships I formed will last a lifetime.
- New skills and opportunities
I gained many transferrable skills I will take with me wherever I go next — effective communication, problem solving, time management and teamwork.
I was also given the opportunity to join committees that I could add to my resume — such as the Social Media Committee.
- Flexibility
Fitting a job into my schedule was the best thing I could do for my present and future self.
