We’ve all been there before. You sit down with your laptop and notebooks, ready to hammer out all your weekly assignments.

Then, there’s an overwhelming silence- it’s TOO quiet.

So, you put in some earbuds and turn your music on. Then you start humming along, and soon you’re belting out your best karaoke song.

When all of a sudden, you’re being kicked out of the library!

If you’re like most college students, listening to music is a great solution to keep yourself focused on studying. However, it can be difficult to find the right playlist for your long study sessions.

Never fear! We’re here to help, with eight playlists for each of your studious moods and our pro tips for long nights of focus.

1. Classical focus

8 Hours of the Best Classical Music

Perfect for writing long papers or staying up late nights, classical music is a great option for when you need to lock in. Soothing jazz or orchestral pieces are great for concentration.

2. Tunes for everyone

Pop Piano Covers: Relaxing and Famous Songs for Sleep, Study and Relaxation

This playlist is great for when you plan study sessions with friends.

Whether you’re on campus or studying at home, having friends to keep you on track and accountable can be immensely helpful. Fun for everyone!

3. Lo Fi music

lofi chill

For relaxing, repetitive beats, lofi is a great form of study entertainment. Engaging enough to prevent boredom, the lofi beats are a calming and studious vibe.

4. Minecraft music

OG Minecraft Nostalgia

Calling all gamers! Growing up listening to late night Minecraft music on repeat, this is my go-to for studying music.

The songs are peaceful and nostalgic, without being distracting.

5. Instrumental movie soundtracks

Best Instrumental Movie Scores

If you’re reading the Hunger Games, consider turning on this playlist to really immerse yourself in the story. Movie and TV soundtracks can feel cinematic and serve as great background music when reading a movie-book adaptation.

6. Coffee shop

STUDY Cafe — Jazz & Bossa Nova

Indie and acoustic music is great for giving off coffee-shop ambiance from the comfort of your dorm, apartment, or library study room. Pair this with your favorite caffeinated beverage, and you’ve got the perfect study combo.

7. Synthwave focus

Synthwave Night Drive

For math or coding majors, this may be your perfect cup of tea. Synthwave has an uplifting feel, to keep you motivated and determined during long study sessions.

8. Natural ambiance

Nature Sounds

The sounds of soothing nature music is a good solution for students who don’t like overwhelming music for their studying.

Listening to rain falling, ocean waves, or forest sounds can be a great alternative to typical study beats!

Now, for our best study tips:

  • Try studying with music that doesn’t have lyrics. If playlists aren’t working, try to study to music without lyrics for a less distracting environment.
  • Devils advocate. For some, it may be easier to listen to songs you know from beginning to end, but for others it may be more beneficial to listen to songs you’ve never heard before.
  • Curate your own special mix or a combination of mixes that works best for you. You know yourself best! Try a combination of techniques and find your perfect match.
  • Don’t be afraid to turn off the music. Sometimes giving your brain a break is the best way to reset after a long day.

And now you’re off! As midterms approach, don’t be afraid to experiment with new study techniques, and find the music that is your soundtrack to success.

Work hard, but remember to give yourself plenty of breaks for all your dedication and persistence this semester!
