Tips to keep you prepared and safe out on the road

The snow is falling and it’s a beautiful sight.

As the day goes on and the snow keeps coming, you start to realize that it’s snowing AND you have places to go, things to do 😯

Winter Driving 101 🚘

1. Get a grip

Check tires, including the spare and make sure they’re inflated to correct tire pressure.

Drive slowly in the highest gear possible and always AVOID harsh braking.

2. Make sure you can see 👀

Clear your windows and mirrors before you set out — have screen scraper and de-icer in your car.

Do NOT use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass. Remember too that heavy snowfall will reduce visibility! Watch out for cinder spreaders and snow plows.

3. Check & use your lights

Use your daytime headlights so that others will see you.

Make sure your headlights and taillights are all in working order and that they are clear of snow.

4. Easy does it

Maneuver gently, slow down and leave EXTRA distance between you and the vehicle in front. Avoid harsh braking and acceleration.

Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. Select a low gear when traveling downhill especially if through bends.

5. Watch out for “black ice”

If the road looks polished or glossy it could be, “black ice” one of winters worst hazards. Watch out for black ice, especially in sheltered/shaded areas on roads, under trees and adjacent to high walls.

6. Give yourself a brake

If you get into a skid, remember — Step, Stay and Steer.

Step on the pedal. Stay on the pedal. Steer around the obstacle. A little bit of steering goes a very long way in an emergency.

7. Get informed 🔊

Listen to local weather and traffic reports. The City of Flagstaff and Arizona Department Of Transportation (ADOT) update their social media accounts often.

8. Stay safe, stay at home

The best thing to do in extremely bad weather is to stay off the road. Take heed of warnings not to go out. If you must travel out in the storm, consider public transit — FLG Mountain Line and keep an eye on their Twitter for updates.

9. Don’t get towed away

The City of Flagstaff has a winter parking ordinance in effect from November to April 1st. During this restriction, NO PARKING on public roadways from midnight to 7:00 am.
