Winter Bucket List: FLG edition
A Lumberjack Guide to our favorite spots
Take a Stroll Downtown
The best time to visit is when the lights are coming on to see the town come to life.
Grab a bite or enjoy a hot cocoa/ coffee as you walk around.
More a fan of people watching? Steep has great views and drinks too!
Bonus: You can take the Lumberjack out of Flagstaff but you can’t take Flagstaff out of a Lumberjack.
Check out the local shops and pick something up to remind you of your time in the pines.
☃️ Build a snowman ☃️
You never know how much snow you’ll get. So the best time to build a snowman is when there’s snow on the ground 😅
Some winters your snowman may be small, other times it may be taller than you and your friends combined.
Going and gathering your friends is part of the fun of building a snowman — which may or may not develop into a snowball fight. Which adds more to the snow fun!
🛷 Go Sledding 🛷
Finding an area to sled can sometimes be a struggle; however, when you find it, it pays off. I didn’t have a sled, but we bought a $5 one from Walmart. But if all fails, cardboard boxes work too!
Depending on the amount of snow, here’s some spots to try:
- South Quad outside of the College of Engineering
- North Quad
Lumberjack tip- be smart and check each snow play area’s website or telephone hotline for an up-to-date snow report, road conditions, and news on closures and special events before you go!
🪩 Watch the Pinecone Drop 🌲
In our town, we host our very own ball drop — the Pinecone drop.
A pine cone? Yes — a 70-pound, 6-foot-tall metallic pinecone. It’s hung from from the top of the Weatherford Hotel with a New Year’s Eve countdown timer.
On New Year’s Eve, the pinecone is lowered from the roof of the hotel to mark the start of the new year.
Not only do celebrate the pinecone — we do it THREE times in one day!
The Pinecone will drop at noon, 10PM, and midnight.
Lumberjack tip: the noon drop is great for younger kids.
📽️ Watch a FREE movie at the Orpheum 🍿
You’ve heard of summer Movies on the Square. Did you know there’s a free winter series too? Head to the Orpheum and get your winter movies on! FREE! All you have to do is RSVP here.
⛸️ Go Ice Skating ⛸️
What better way to feel the winter vibes than going ice skating. You can go to the Jay Lively rink.
Going with friends will make it more fun. If you’ve never done it before all the more reason to go and try it out.
